When sex or intimacy is painful or uncomfortable, it is frequently due to a condition known as vaginismus. Vaginismus is vaginal tightness causing discomfort, burning, pain, intimacy problems or the complete inability to have intercourse. It may occur at any age, even after enjoying intercourse previously.
You may be wondering if you or someone you love has vaginismus. Vaginismus may be present if any of the following symptoms have been persistent for at least 6 months:
• Burning or stinging with tightness during sexual intercourse
• Difficult or impossible penetration, entry pain, uncomfortable insertion of penis
• Difficulty inserting tampons or undergoing pelvic/gynecological exams or procedures
• Avoidance of sex due to pain and/or failure
• Anxiety or fear related to having sexual intercourse due to anticipated pain
